Vad innebär det ”att gå runt i en cirkel”? Vad är det jag gör om och om igen? Händer det inget nytt? Det kan man fråga sig även inom en grupp, en förening etc. Inom TALAkademin funderas det nog. Är det inga nya ide´er på gång? Det var länge sedan sist. Jo, Stamningsföreningen Västra Götaland kan ge svar på en sådan fråga. Nu på lördag får man besök av  TALAkademins representanter. Då kommer bl. a. Barbara Dahms  dynamiska stamningsterapi att ventileras. Det är nytt inom TALAkademin.

Kan du… så kan väl jag. Eller vi kan det tillsammans!

Here are a few things which come to mind.  First, when you move around a lot, make it meaningful.  Don’t just move for the sake of moving.  Use appropriate gestures/movements to illustrate the point you are making.  Second, use lots of vocal variety – volume and pitch.  Go in with a positive attitude – one of having fun and entertaining those professors with all your knowledge.   See how much you can make biochemistry sound like the most fun thing on the planet J  Be enthusiastic as you are presenting.  And remember to smile and look confident, even if you aren’t feeling quite that way inside.

Before I give talks, I always practise doing them several times on my own, in the way I plan to do them on the actual day – including all the vocal variety, body language etc, in front of an imaginary audience.  I find this really helps, so you might like to give that a go too.

Det är alltid träning som gäller. Ett jobb man måste utföra. Därför måste man inlemma sig någon form av automatiserad inbyggd träningsaktivitet. Först då får man maximal – och nödvändig – träningseffekt. Ett bra tips är att engagera sig som kursledare för den träning det gäller. Det ger bra utdelning i TALAkademins verksamhet. Det räcker inte med att erfara en aha-upplevelse! Man måste träna in ett nytt beteende. Det tar tid har jag förstått. Mer tid än vad man i förstone räknar med. Därför är det helt avgörande, att man får veta hur lång tid träning av ett nytt beteende tar. Jag menar, att träningstiden varierar för olika individer. Därför är det en viktig information, att man får veta hur lång tid det i genomsnitt tar för en grupp personer att uppnå en varaktig önskad beteendeförändring. Låt oss snarast undersöka saken inom TALAkademin!

Toastmasters – vad är det? Finns det i Sverige? Speaking Circles?

”…One of the founding members has suggested creating a more positive version of the ‘Ah counter’ role for this particular club; at least during its early stages of development.  We’re calling the role the ‘Flow Evaluator’, and guess who’s trialling it out next week?……………..yep, me!  So, rather than look out for and count people’s use of inappropriate hesitations, filler words etc, I’ve to comment on their ‘flow’.

So, any ideas how I can do that?  Apart from the obvious – ie. observe where there’s a lack of inappropriate hesitations and filler words.  I’ve to keep my comments positive, encouraging and focussed on building people up, rather than pointing out their faults.  And generally speaking, to comment on the evening as a whole, rather than pick out individuals.  I think this role’s a really good idea actually.

Anyway, any ideas would be very much appreciated J  Thanks.

What exactly does speaking smoothly mean to you? The best way to get over the fear of the big blocks is, when you are not in a fear situation, to learn how your speech system works to produce natural smooth speech. Carry out this process  again and again so that when you are afraid it will be so familiar to you that you can stay present and repeat what you have done so many times before.

Are there any situations where you can practice talking in a REALLY LOUD voice?  I’m talking about a loud, POWERFUL voice.

Much louder and more powerful than you would ever be comfortable with.  If you like, we can try this on Skype.

Thanks John, if it wasn't for you and
your book I wouldn't even believe that I could ever recover. I've got a
question, so although I have already come a long way in my understanding,
unfortunately I still sometimes hold back quite a bit. I have some bad habits
that I should break, like switching hard words for easier ones, saying like or
um to try to get myself out of a block, stopping and repeating myself, and doing
little twitches and stuff to try to break free of a block. I try to always talk
loud and expressive now, but I still rely on those things when I'm holding back
a lot. I tried not doing them, but then I would just be stuck in the block for
like 10 seconds, and people would start guessing what I'm saying, and getting
uncomfortable. If I just stop, and wait until I'm ready without even forcing it
out, then it could take forever. So I'm not sure what to do, because I should
break those bad habits, but when I don't I'm forcing words out, which isn't
good, and if I make sure not to force them out, it could take forever. So what
do you guys think, and what have you done about that?

Yeah, I hear your frustration, Alex.  It’s hard to make concrete suggestions because I’m not working with you directly.  But here’s something you might start fooling around with.  Write up a list of difficult situations, starting with the most difficult at the time and listing easier and easier situations as you work your way down the list.  At the bottom of the list should be situations in which you never have any difficulties speaking.  Once you do that, post the list and we can start exploring what we see and forming strategies.

Själv är bästa dräng!

really mattered to me (athletics, music, academics..), things that I really
cared about and spent considerable time working hard at, I've been able to
become very successful in. Everything that is except for one thing, my pesky
speech impediment. Early on, I went through years of therapy, then quit
throughout high school and college. Following my undergraduate years, I started
reading on my own and came across John Harrison's book. Finally, something other
than easy on-sets, taking deep breaths, and keeping my voice on. Finally
something that actually made sense. I started doing my own therapy, which
includes reading, observation, and emotional connection. I've read every book
John had listed in the back, and am now re-reading them and concurrently am
writing my own book (which I hope someday I can reflect on how I beat my speech
impediment, and maybe someday I can publish this book, but for now its just for
my own use).

Transfer – betyder överföring t. ex. till andra situationer

Ja, här är det åter fråga om  ”expand your confort zone”. Något som Alan Badmington ofta återkommer till i många av sina uttalanden. Hur var det nu vi gjorde inom TALAkademin för att utvidga vårt arbetsfält? Är det någon som kommer ihåg det år 2015? Berätta i så fall! Vi behöver alla utvidga vårt verksamhetsområde.

-Jag vill inte stamma… det är oklokt att ens uttala den frasen.
Om det fortfarande gäller att vår hjärna negligerar ”inte” (negationer i tanke och tal), måste vi alla tänka oss för  när vi talar (och tänker). Annars blir t.ex. ”jag vill inte stamma.” i stället ”jag vill stamma.” Så länge den regeln gäller måste vi alla – och särskilt vi inom TALAkademin – träna på att formulera oss positivt. Det betyder att i. st. f. ”jag vill inte stamma” måste vi komma i håg att omformulera oss. Det kan då t.ex. vara klokt att hällre säga ”jag vill tala med flyt”.

I’ve already made some significant changes in my mindset and attitudes that have actually given me more freedom of speech. – Vad är det som skapat skrädsla att tala? – (Ja, stamningen förstås) – I used to always think of stuttering as this horrible, unacceptable thing, so I barely ever spoke. Whenever I did talk I would talk really quietly and with barely any vocal variation. Då lät talet ganska tyst och monotont – Now I realized that stuttering isn’t really a big deal, so I started talking more now, and louder, and more expressively. I can just tell people I have a stuttering problem, and laugh about it. – Så bra! Om man kan skratta åt att man stammar och vågar tala om det för omgivningen – I know that I can and will eventually overcome my ”holding back in speech” problem, but I’m not in a rush to, and understand it will take time. I used to always think everyone is judging me and my speech, but the truth is people are probably more focused their own problems. I also used to always think of stuttering as part of my identity, and I thought of myself as a stutterer. Now I realized its just a way of speaking, and a bunch of different problems that cause me to hold back my speech, not who I am. I decided that I’m going to do drama class in my school, Träna drama är bra. Det har vi gjort i TALAkademin då och då. which is pretty much all public speaking, and a Toastmasters for teens class, since you have to be 18 to do regular Toastmasters. – Ja, tränat muntlig framställning. Det gör vi – och har vi ständigt gjort i TALAkademin. I’m already nervous though imagining myself standing in front of all those people trying to talk, and not being able to say anything, with all the other people in my class all uncomfortable an not even sure what to say, and then my teacher kicking me out of the class and saying ”why would you do the one class that’s all speaking if you have a stuttering problem, Ja, så olyckligt kan man tänka. Låt oss i stället tänka som Victor Rydberg tänkte: ”Vad rätt du tänkt, vad du i kärlek vill, vad skönt du drömt, kan ej av tiden härjas…” –  we don’t have time to wait for you!” Kan en lärare verkligen säga så? – Lätt att tänka i alla fall… –I know that probably won’t really happen, but I want to be at least somewhat successful and not wreck the whole class.

I don’t really want to interfere with the natural automatic speaking process though, so I’m not sure if I should use any kind of technique. En samlig av olika processer

Det är ett användbart synsätt tycker jag. Som i muntlig framställning. Det är ”en kollektion av processer” som man har anledning att se till att de fungerar. Genom TRÄNING av olika processer. Så kan jag beskriva TALAkademins verksamhet på den tiden som det begavs. Vad som gällde rent konkret kan man få en uppfattning om genom att studera TALAkademins hemsida. Det är därför den har kommit till.
